Nostaglic Now 1990s Streetwear Lookbook

In May of 1995, at the tender age of seven, my mother uprooted my two sisters and I from the breezy, chill, beautiful city of San Diego, California to the gritty, fast-paced, diverse and equally beautiful city of West Oakland.  It was a culture shock. I didn’t understand people in Oakland, nor did many of them understand me. Why did people say Hella, and My Bad?  People asked why I talked and dressed like a nerd.  I was confused, and felt unaccepted.

1990s fashion images that have inspired much of my personal style as well as this retro photoshoot

That same year, I heard this new sound I never heard before.  The beat slapped in my ear and bumped in my chest, the lyrics were like poetry that I already related to at age seven, I felt it was grabbing a hold of me.  The raw sounds, beats and street conscious words of San Quinn, Tupac, 3X Crazy, E-40 & the Click, Souls of Mischief, The Pharcyde, Notorious B.I.G, Bone Thugz-N-Harmony, D’Angelo, Jay-Z, the neo-soul movement ushered in a new style of streetwear that was reflective of the streets; urban angst, vibrant color blocking and prints, athletic outerwear, and oversized flashy and graphic pieces; Hip-Hop.

San Quinn’s Live-N-Direct 1995 introduced me to the rap scene in Oakland in 1995

Bone Thugz N Harmony’s 1995 album embodied an urban, gritty image that complimented their quick, melodic voices and tough Cleveland, OH upbringing.

Four young, ambitious, entrepeneurial spirited Oakland bred men are photographed in this Spring/Summer 2014 lookbook inspired by Oakland 1995; the year of Nostalgia that represents the juxtaposition of Southern California and Bay Area styles, the grit of the urban jungle and glamorization of hip hop all while looking to the future in the way we dress.

I Heart Music: Throwback Thursday 1996

Ahhh 1996. I remember it like it was yesterday.  I was in the third grade and had just moved to Oakland from San Diego and had never heard these sounds before.  Since youtube wasn’t in existence yet,  I was addicted to music video channels like The Box,  MTV video channels CMC (Bay Area 90s kids know all about CMC!).  For the music edition of Throwback Thursday these innovate songs made in 1996 take me back to when I was that kid with brand new eyes!

Burnin rubber, whats upper?  I was so confused by Bay lingo as a kid lol. But the music I always loved.

Classic Aaliyah video and this Missy and Timbland beat will forever slap.  Will always love their steez.

D’Angelo came onto the scene with this jam.  This is still so smooth to me.

Here I am flossin, diggin your steelo! I swear I’m bringing back these 90s terms like ‘steelo’, ‘saucy’, ‘bootsy’

Color Me Cool: Colorful Hair

While watching the Fall New York Fashion Week shows, I have noticed that there is a resurgance of colorful hair on models on the runways. I have always loved colorful hair and like the idea of self expression through dyeing your hair! Going bleach blonde is nothing new, but it has never felt so fresh for this Spring. These are some of my favorite colorful hair looks over the years.

Bleached Blondie

Kelly Bundy circa 1990 is probably most iconic fashion bleach blonde that I can think of. It makes us want to grab the peroxide.

Pink Baby

During the Pre-Fall 2014 Fashion Shows, Giambatista Valli featured a model with baby pink colored hair and it gave me nostalgia to Gwen Stefani’s pink hair circa Return of Saturn (we all remember No Doubt’s Simple Kind of Life music video).

Hate it or love it, Nicki Minaj brought pink hair on the hip hop map.

Auburn Reds and Browns

Going dark red or brown for Spring is the perfect transition from winter. It feels good to change!

My fellow fashionista friend Kimmy recently went dark brown and rocks it for Spring!

If dyeing your hair isn’t your preference, or you want something less permanent for change, try expressing yourself with different colors or styles of outfits that you wouldn’t normally. I love how these women express themselves with colorblocking:
